Abstract

Differences in operating system architecture and resource management mechanisms can affect computer performance when executing various types of workloads. Windows and Linux are two widely used operating systems for general computing, academic activities, and software development. Although both systems provide similar capabilities for running various applications, differences in processor, memory, and storage management may result in different levels of resource efficiency. This study aims to analyze and compare the performance of Windows and Linux based on CPU utilization, memory usage, and Disk I/O activity under different workload levels. An experimental approach is employed by applying measurable workload scenarios to both operating systems using the same hardware environment. The workloads are designed into several levels, namely light, medium, and heavy, allowing changes in resource utilization to be observed systematically. The observed parameters include CPU utilization percentage, memory usage, disk read and write performance, and the time required by the system to complete specific processes. The experiments are conducted repeatedly to obtain more consistent measurements, followed by descriptive analysis using average values and variations in the collected results. The study is expected to provide an overview of the performance characteristics of Windows and Linux when handling different workloads and to identify resource utilization patterns in each operating system. The findings are expected to provide practical considerations for selecting an appropriate operating system for specific computing needs, particularly in academic environments, computer laboratories, and software development activities..
